I knew no father — nor much cared
For those (it seemed to me)
Who filled the homes of other boys
With wrath and tyranny.
I learned (and soon!) to stop my mouth:
'My mother is divorced...'
Brought disapproving, sheepish smiles,
And every smile was forced.
Still (true enough) with friends and peers,
It set me worlds apart;
That 'D' word cleared a tiger’s path —
And broke my mother’s heart.
Some kisses are like octopi —
All tearing beak and suction,
While some are moths that flutter by
On wings of introduction.
Yet others are a mother’s balm
To comfort or to wean us,
Those stolen — burn us like napalm,
The venomed bite of Venus.
A tipsy aunty’s are the worst,
The bane of what they capture;
The best are hesitant at first —
Then pave the road to rapture.
Hooray! Hooray! the first of May,
Outdoor fucking starts today,
But insulate your derriéres
Unless you’re ducks or polar bears.
The rain is wet, the wind will freeze
All manner of extremities,
Best wait for June to rut and rout,
And cast no clout ’til May is out!
Don’t miss out on the poetry event of the year!
